The Story Of Stuff

Hi everyone, when we were discussing the issues from the video The Story of  Stuff. I noticed some of you nodding. (I’m not sure if it’s because you are falling asleep, but I sure hope not) As a lecturer, it's really good to see things click inside your head. I've posted the video that we watched in class this week so that you can recap what you have learnt from it and hopefully you can watch it again and really think about how you feel about this video.
Here are a few questions that you might want to look at to help you think about this video that you have just watched.

1.     After you watch a video like that, how do you feel?

2.     Do you agree with what was said about the stuff we use and consume? (Do you believe what she says?)

3. What do you think we can do personally to solve some of the issues we are going through because of these problems?

Remember you have a limit to the amount you can write. Up to 350 words only so make it count. Another video will be posted together with this video below.

  1. "The Story of Stuff" with Annie Leonard opens up a shocking yet realistic truth in our lives. It portrays stuff that they do not need it at all on an appropriate time. Stuff which is consuming the world's limited resources, destroying Mother Nature, making a Living Hell for 3rd World countries and bring suffering to its fellow citizens. What I felt after watching the video were a blast of emotions(Shocked, angry, confused and numb )and questions started popping out of my mind, it made me to think twice on how "civilized" we are…Or are we?

It’s amusing that the video actually describes our society when it comes to buying, consuming, using, or even wasting stuff relentlessly regardless of gender, race, or age. No matter which faction (Government, Politicians, Society, and Consumers), I felt that we are the catalysts towards this critical situation and everyone should be responsible, I also felt that this video broadcasts a cruel yet a true experience in realizing the lives of the people who are living in poverty and hardship when trying to feed themselves.

Besides that, I agree with Annie Leonard's statement and speech about this situation. She did a perfect job in stressing out and expressing the critical matters to us audiences in order to change the lifestyle that we are adapting it. I also agree about Annie's justifications on the stuff we use and consume. Annie's has successfully opened our eyes, ears and minds as she portrayed the selfish and inhumane acts that we are doing now, while on the other hand showing the ugly side of the people who have suffered from our actions.

As human beings, we should play a pivotal role in countering these problems from arising from continuing it into a vicious cycle. For example we could try to set up human rights groups, make and legalize laws to protect these people, introduce fair or equal trades or jobs to them with a good pay and insurance. Thou it will be a long and tedious process to stop this situation, but as long there are people who are willing to stand up and fight, nothing is impossible.

  3. The story of stuff, Annie Leonard makes people realize that how we ourselves as a consumer has changed the environment. We would never think that a cheap product would effect the earth. Even humans have to suffer the toxics that come from our product just to cut cost. It’s also unfair for countries overseas that have to bare with the pollutions and also the resources that are gone causing more health problems to arise as well as global warming.

I’m shocked after watching that video because I never knew cheap stuffs could affect the earth ‘s resources and also things that we are using right now can be releasing toxics, who knows the computer I’m using now is even producing toxics. The stuffs doesn’t change much but society doesn’t realize and view one another based on updating one’s self. It’s also very pity for societies that are living in poverty forcing themselves to work in hazardous area and making their future child affected by those toxins.

I do now believe that what she says is true about the stuff we use. It’s because we always want to keep ourselves updated by getting the latest stuffs. She also mention that we‘re always watching television and shopping which is very true, without Television we wouldn‘t know what new stuffs are around and it wouldn’t influence our thought on getting it just to fit into society. It’s also true that she express that the producers and government should do something to reduce harming the environment and emphasis the consumers to change their lifestyle to improve the environment.

As part of this society, we play an important role on saving the environment and reducing wastes that are killing us. Besides the 3R we could also start up awareness campaigns or even do more interesting videos for the youth to watch like what Annie did. We should also let people know green technology is rising and is not just all myth but it’s around and that we all use this technology. The society should also not be so mind conscious about the latest trends. Together we can do it and make a difference.

  5. First of all, I regard this video “The story of stuff” as essential viewing and the video brought some messages about our people daily life routine: extraction, production, distribution, consumption and disposal. This video also emphasize that actually there are a lots of story that we don’t know behind the scene. After finish watching this video, I felt this video is accurately present the problem we face as a global society. And it represents an overview about our way of consumption and economy waste. I think that this video should be used in every elementary school as a teaching tool to create awareness that our world’s resources are going to exhaust soon. Certainly, I felt that I should change my habit of abandon or throwing stuff easily immediately.

Moreover, I strongly agree what the filmmaker, Annie Leonard had said about the stuff we use and consume. There are limited resources for people’s unlimited wants. Nowadays, with the development of modern technology, every people tend to follow the trend and use the latest stuff to update themselves. They are convinced to throw away stuff that is still perfectly useful. For an example, people like to shopping buy new clothes again and again to follow the trend for satisfy themselves. On the other hand, we all knew that we are running out of resources yet nobody take action to solve this problem. Through this video, she took the opportunity to tell everyone, we didn’t pay for the stuff we bought because the original cost for producing stuff is higher than we expected.

In my opinion, I think the government should take action or restrict some laws and regulations. In personally, we can help to save the world or rainforest by challenge and changing ourselves with something different. First, we can use shopping bag instead of using unwanted plastic bag because plastic cannot be decomposed no matter after how many years. To overcome these problems, we can carry out the simple way, that’s 3R- Reduce, reuse, and recycle. We should think twice before we throw away our stuff and we must think rationally whether that we are necessary to buy the stuff or something else.

  7. After watching this video, I really feel upset for Mother Nature and Earth. They are not only ruined n trashed but literally destroyed by us, humans just for our needs, comforts and happiness. More animals and plants that are losing their habitat and food are struggling to survive and thus, facing extinction. I do not understand how humans can be so selfish to take resources from other country or move their factories overseas just because they do not want to pollute their own country. I feel pity for workers working in the factories exposed with dangerous chemicals. All these toxic are then transferred to babies through breast feeding. Babies will suffer for what we do. I did not know that cheap stuff would cause another to suffer.

People are easily influenced to get more stuff although it might be useless. Some are obsessed with things that are always having new models or trend such as clothes, cars and hand phones. I am ashamed as consumers because people do not buy only things that they need. People nowadays buy stuff for their own satisfaction. People spend too much on stuff. Besides that, I feel happy because there is still some fighting to save the forest, some trying to have clean production and some encouraging people to recycle.

Yes, I agree and believe about what she said on the usage and consumption of stuff. People nowadays buy too much stuff and the truth is, not all of that stuff is useful. In fact, 99% of the stuff we buy are trash within 6 months. Media literacy often influences us to get new stuff. Like what she said, perceived obsolescence occurs everywhere. We want to follow the fashion era and not be outdated. We are afraid of being laughed at and teased whenever we kept using the same stuff that we bought 6 months ago.

In fact, there are many ways to help solve this problem. People should start doing the 3R that are recycling, reusing and reducing stuff around us. We should change our habits on shopping and think before we buy. We should only buy what we need and have budget on them. Other than that, some can also post videos of true story behind stuff and those who have suffered to produce these stuff.

  9. The video The Story of Stuff is really an eye-opener, I’ve always notice this problem but I didn’t know that it was this bad. I feel that people nowadays are becoming greedier. They would do whatever it takes no matter how bad it might be to earn as much profit as they can and also the people who buy these products are getting greedier too. Even though the things that we use are still in a good condition, we tend to be tempted to purchase newer version things that were recently released although we don’t really need it. As we constantly purchase these things even though we don’t really need it, we actually encourage the producers to produce more stuff to supply us. Therefore, we are also responsible for this problem.

Yes, I do agree with what she said. The story behind the stuff we use has been hidden from us. We don’t know how much people suffer and the damage that has been made to the nature just to produce the stuff which satisfies us. Moreover, we also don’t know the amount toxic that has been put into our food to preserve it. I do believe with what she said, people always aim to buy cheap stuff but what they don’t know is why is it that cheap? This stuff is cheap because the workers that practically made this stuff were not pay with reasonable income. Other than that, people always throw stuff that are still useable and buy a newer one just because they don’t like how the old one looks like. This is one of the bad habits that only appeared when the world was modernized.

What we can actually do personally is to use the stuff that was purchased until it is necessary to buy a new one. This is one of the habits that can clearly be seen in our society. Moreover, we should also buy things that can be recycled so that we don’t need to constantly use the nature to produce new stuff. Of course, doing all this is not going to change much, the most important thing we must do is to increase the awareness of people about this problem. It is a serious problem and I think all of us should work together to minimize this issue.

  10. After I watch this environmental education video, I felt that her general intentions of the piece were good because it encourage people to be aware of what they’re buying, why they’re buying it, how we get the stuff we get, and where it goes. This video is to try to be knowledgeable about our place in the world and our impact on the environment and society.

I do agree with most of her points but not all of them. I agree the system she points out that is in fact in crisis because it is a linear system and we live on a finite planet and you cannot run a linear system on a finite planet indefinitely. However, I am not so sure about the pillows things. That does not seem like it would be true. This is supposed to be a persuasive video but the bad things she explain more than good things. I believe that most of the information from the video was valid, of course there is going to be some bias, but that is expected. While some things may be a bit exaggerated or stretched, something of that sort think that it is perfectly reasonable to assume that the information provided is true. Not everything mentioned in “the Story of Stuff” is evil, but too much of anything is bad. I think we can all agree that as the consumers we have far surpassed this “too much”.

What we can do is to strive for balance to production and consumer intake. We can buy and use in moderation which is consuming what is necessary. For example, we can wisely use energy, eat smaller portions, watch less TV, use the computer less or SHOP less. I think shop-less can reduce pollution because the attitude of chasing new thing will make more “dumping” stuff every day, and no one really needs 20+ pairs of shoes. By modifying how much we buy and consume, setting limits and getting what we need, we can slowly decrease our dependence on the major corporations and decrease the rate of destruction to our planet.

  11. This video made me really felt that we are wasting non-stop. She pointed out that U.S with the 5% of population in the world consuming 30% of world's resources and creating 30% of world's waste. The statistic clearly shows that we are consuming the resources without controlling ourselves. It is very embarrassed to tell that we are nothing different to them too! We tend to purchase new stuff although the old one is still in a good condition. There will always be a supply if there's a demand. We are the one who encouraged them to create more stuff which needs the resources. This video had stated out the global issues which were caused by the consumption and wasting of the stuff.

Yes, I strongly agree with what Annie Leonard had said. In our society or even just around us, we tend to use and throw the stuff until it had become a global issue. Regardless the stuff is cheap or expensive, we often seek for our own satisfaction, our ego satisfaction. We have made abundance of garbage every day. The consumption cycle portrays us as human beings are gradually becoming more selfish, greedier, and cruel to the third world. We use more than we share. As what she mentioned, 80% of the planet's original forests are gone. Many people are suffering but we still dispose our stuff like nothing happened jst because of we do not want to be outdated.

We can personally waste less. There are many opportunities to nurture Zero Waste in our culture. We can practices new habits like using both sides of paper, use recycle bags instead of plastic bags or avoid bottled water and other over packaged products. Although it's a very simple way of doing it, many around us still did not practice it. Moreover, we can talk to everyone about the issue and make your voice heard. Talking around about conserving and preserving our resources may raises awareness and inspire others to action. As individuals, we can influence the media to represent the issues we care about. Recycle! That's the simplest way to solve the problems. Recycling saves energy and reduces waste products. For company who uses toxics in their products, have to take them back. That is the great incentive for them to get the toxics out.

  12. After watching this video, I have been surprised that actually we are keep on creating garbage and destroying our only one planet. We are given a beautiful planet and we are responsible to take care of our Mother Nature. Well, it doesn’t goes like that. For me, human beings are the destroyer of the earth. The greediness and selfishness has conquered humans’ mind and heart. Has technologies improved the world today? Well, technologies do improve our life quality, but it brings disaster as well. I feel angry and disappointed after watching this video and I started to think a lot of questions. “Am I destroying the world as well?” “Why humans do not appreciate what they’ve got?” “Why we always defeated by our greatest enemy- greedy?” “Why….?”

I’m very agree and believe what Annie Leonard had said. We are blinded by all the advertisements and promotions that show on the television or anywhere. We keep on update ourselves by buying all the new products and dump those outdated stuff just because of don’t want laugh or discriminate by others. Nowadays, all the electronic stuff or machines are designed to be short life span so that we will keep on renew our spoiled stuff. Those designers are pretty selfish and cruel because they design short life span products to increase their sales and profit of the company. Because of their selfishness, our natural resources are exploited non-stop and yet environment are being polluted and destroyed.

As part of this wonderful planet’s member, human beings play a vital role to protect our Mother Nature from being destroyed. Every single person should realize their role as a member of the Earth and should cut off their selfishness. What we can do personally is we can buy what we need but not what we want. We can practice 3R method(reduce, reuse and recycle). By doing this we can reduce the garbage we dump and yet it can conserve a lot of resources and energy. The fact is many of our resources as well as our Earth is not renewable and we have to start taking control of our selves beginning with the world we live in. Global warming is no longer viewed as a theory by scientists and has sadly become a fact. The change needed must be in your actions today in order to ensure a bright tomorrow.

  13. honestly after watching this video i think the corporations, marketing department, company are .....( beyond words to describe )or genius. they can program our mind in such a way that we continue to spending money on there product.

i disagree with what Annie Leonard said Through this video, she took the opportunity to tell everyone, we didn’t pay for the stuff we bought because the original cost for producing stuff is higher than we expected. If we had to pay the full price for every goods we consume, we wont be able to afford anything!!! Annie Leonard did not took account of inflation. For example, the food we eat. those people in the padi field get pay 2 usd per dad and the rice we buy now is rm 2 per kg. So try imagine if the padi field workers get pay according to market price HOW MUCH WILL OUR RICE COST NOW?

I think we can personally solve some of the issues in the video by one word. that word is MODERATION. if we do everything in moderate none of the problem will accorded. There would not be excess use of Mother Nature.

  14. This is excellent documentary. But I think this is bad and good at the same time. It’s good because there were a lot valid points. The Story of Stuff is fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. This exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world.
It’s bad because some parts sounded like extremism. For example, “Toxics, toxics, toxics.” It’s more repetitious than a “HeadOn” commercial. I felt like I was being manipulated through this section because of the focus on telling you that any big company’s PRODUCTION produces TOXICS with zero benefit.
Now, for those who’ve noticed (particularly those with small children), there have been tons of recalls lately about lead-infused children’s toys. This is a justifiable concern – these things are way above acceptable toxicity levels.
Then Annie Leonard raised the freak-out level: We dip our pillows in BFR (brominated flame retardants), a horribly toxic man-made chemical, and we sleep on them!
Not knowing anything about BFRs, I did some research on this. I found two things:
One, BFRs are used primarily in electronics and electronics plastics. Things like computer circuit boards, the plastic casing around a TV set, around the rubber sheaths encasing wires in a computer, that kind of thing. And the BFRs are chemically bonded to those components. That means they’re not flying into the air, we’re not breathing them in.
Two, I was unable to find any evidence of companies dipping pillows or pillowcases in BFRs before selling them
I’m not necessarily disagreeing with Annie Leonard here, but I do think more research and facts are needed before I can completely agree with what she’s saying.
In my opinion, The Story of Stuff seemed to be too biased – ignoring some issues or misrepresenting others. While I think it would be great to have “a system that doesn’t waste resources or people… sustainability, equity, renewable, local living economy…” I think we’d have to give up a lot of things to make that happen. Things that make our life better.

  16. This video is really surprising and I felt a little guilty after watching this. It made me realize that WE DID NOT pay for the stuffs WE buy but the people who paid with their future n health just to make those stuff we use. I felt guilty because of this. People are all very ego and people want the latest in trend things in the society. I am like this too. I agree what she said about girls wanting to buy shoes which has fat heels then go back to slim heels and now the trend is back to fat heels. I have shoes at home but I still want to buy new heels just because it was in trend now.
Besides, it’s also good to know how much natural resources we have used. The more stuff we use, the more product is produced and the more natural resources are used. I think that the world might come to an end if we don't start using less things and stop our egoism and also money minded. She said that "80% of the planet original forests are gone." It’s true as we can see all around us. Mountains and hills are all bombed just to build houses for the people to gain more money. I think that they should stop this and protect the environment and leave the forest for the future generation to see and experience the forest. If we don't stop this, there will not be any forest left and the future generations will not experience Mother Nature.
In my opinion, we can prevent this by using our things until they cannot be repaired anymore. To do this, it is really difficult because we all want comfort and the best things in our life (unlimited wants) but it is the only way we can make the world a better place for the future generations and to prevent the people who work in factories from paying the things we use with their future and health because they deserve to have a bright future like all of us.

  17. I really appreciate that ANNIE LEONARD raised this awareness about this important issues on stuffs and how we consume them and also to MR KEITH who let us know about this video.

There were some things about this video that really struck my mind. it made me understand what we are doing to our planet and the fact that we need to put it to a stop. This involves the production processes, how these products are consumed, how they are disposed, and how it affects people. i concur with what Annie Leopard said. Humans consume and dispose stuffs not just because they are worn out but because human wants are insatiable and because of this, we as humans do not consider or care about how these stuffs are produced and the efforts man put into this processes.

Resources are not just wasted but people are also wasted. Think of the people who are out there working so hard just to get paid. Think about what they go through. we buy these stuffs out of our insatiable wants not just because they are worn out but just to satisfy our own needs, thinking we are the ones paying the prices but NO the price we pay is not on the price tag we see when buying these stuffs.
We consume a lot and dispose them so fast just to get a new product thereby forgetting that can run out of resources. And by doing all these, it shows no civilization. We even destroy the environment as well by causing pollution; we need to think of what people have gone through. Some pay by their loss of natural resources, some pay by endangering their health, their future and at the end we dispose them like nothing happened.

in order to stop all these we should control our level of consumption and try our best to use our resources well. as humans we can amend our ways by reducing the way we waste (zero waste), by making budgets, we need to be civilized and by so doing, we will be able to protect our society and the people’s rights and the people.

  19. The video “The Story of Stuff” by Annie Leonard really opened my eyes to the cast difference between the way we value our stuff and the actual value of everything we are using at the moment.
The whole process of producing stuff is not limited to the extraction, production, distribution, use and disposal as we all know. There is more to this perfect process than we know. What this process does not show is the manpower used during all the parts of the process. The resources on Earth are limited. Yet our consumption rate is steadily increasing. A new phone might be disposed of within 6 months just because a better technology came out. If this consumption rate does not stop, the resources on Earth will be used up pretty soon.
We always thought we were already paying for the items we bought, however that is not the truth. In reality, the people that paid for the items are the workers in the factories who sacrificed their health and time and getting little pay in return. Various harmful chemicals are used to produce the stuff that we use and take for granted. Many people just accept the harmful chemicals as they think that this is the price to pay for technology.
Half the class, including me might not have even known the cruel realty of the workers in the factory. I realized most of the people that are using the resources from Mother Nature ruthlessly never gave this a thought. Materiality was a more important aspect to them compared to the future of our planet. The government claims to protect our rights; they are helping us but what about the poor workers in the factories? Nobody is fighting for their rights. They are being exploited against their will.
I hope more people will see this video and understand the cold fact that the resources on Earth are being used up at a very high rate. We need to play our part to stop this or we might lose our only living place.

  20. After watching the video, I felt very bad and ashamed for what I’ve done over the years. I used air-conditioner for my self-satisfaction then I change a new one just because the air-con does not work very well, I on the lights most of the time even if it’s day time until the light bulb overheated and have to change new light bulbs. But after watching this video over and over again, I realize, this is bad, I’m one of the Mother Nature destroyer. This video ‘The Story of Stuff‘ by Annie Leonard really made me realize the importance of not WASTING all the stuff we bought and had surprise me as the statistic had showed me that one third of the resources has being consumed. And if more people consume and produce stuffs, our trees and natural resources will get lesser and lesser until we couldn’t consume anything anymore. Everything we use can cause pollution and after when we are bored of using those stuff we bought, we’ll throw it away and buy new stuff, to satisfy our wants more than our needs. These stuffs like laptops, phones, television, etc. can produce more toxins that can affect one’s health and may cause death as well.
I agree with Annie Leonard after realizing how bad it was to live in a world full of stuffs taken by human from resources and causes toxins around the world. I agree that the society are not aware of the lacking of natural resources in the earth and are not aware of these disadvantages when we buy more stuffs. Most of the society concern about their status, therefore they will buy more advanced technology to show the other society that they are rich, and that they will get more respect from others and more good services.
It’s not hard at all to save our Mother Nature and we all have the responsibility to take care of our natural resources. I can help by buying stuffs which are eco-friendly and are only important to me. We, as a society have to do so as well, to stop the cycle from cycling too much.

  21. After watching this video i felt that we(humans) never stop destroying this Earth because everything we do will pollute the environment.
I agree with what Annie Leonard said in the video "The Story Of Stuff" and actually believe what she said in the video, every process of making a product out is actually destroying our Earth and destroying us. Then Government should be take care of us, protect our rights but not only helping the rich people and those large corporations. We are using too much stuff because we are wasting it without proper usage. We can solve some of these issues personally like we can off the light in day time if we have enough sun light so that we won't waste the electricity and continue to let the life span of the bulb running, the more the time of a life span of a bulb wasted means more electricity and wasted and new bulb will be replacing the old one soon. We should buy what we need not what we want so that we will stop wasting things just like Annie Leonard said in "The Story Of Stuff"

  22. Based on the video, is quite true that what was Annie Leonard telling all about. We as human being so selfish because we just use and throw it away.In this video, Annie Leonard had pointed out the that there is 5% of world population but they had used 30% of the world resources.Besides, I found that human are quite pathetic that people have to follow the trend or fashion otherwise you being leftout. For an example, the fat heel shoes that wore by a woman was being laughed by her colleagues who are wearing skinny heels. Why would the people have to follow the fashion of how they wear and why they just cannot be their way style? They should know that the best thing is human did not wearing anything instead of wasting so much of money on fashion!Somemore the more you buy,the more the producer will produce and the more resources going to waste.

I do quite believe that "End of the world", is not to afraid you all but wanted to let you guys realize it.As human population increase, it will causes more place have to develop and more mountain and forest have to bomb because of them. Some developer might take this as opportunity or excuse, they will go and cut down the forest and develop there as well to help them bring profit.Even though it is illegal but the government cannot stop them from that. This is because the price of the building is one of one the factor to stimulate the country economics.

As you can see that, our environment is getting worse and worse. People can protect the environment by changing their lifestyle by 3R, recycle, reuse and reduce. Besides, we also have to think of our next generation to have better life.

  23. After watching the video “The Story Of Stuffs” by Annie Leonard , I feel that everyone of us are wasting the earth’s resources without realizing this is actually the biggest mistake human had ever made ! We as a consumer purchasing necessary stuffs and unnecessary stuffs everyday . We never thought of a little cheap stuff can affect so much to the earth by producing toxins that will eventually threaten our health . I can see the selfishness which contain in every single human in the earth including me myself . I love to shop and buy new stuffs too , not awareness of how much toxins I had produced since the day I was born . It is a very shameful fact to tell out .

I totally agreed with what was said by Annie Leonard about this video . Let’s take a look from people beside us . Everyone of us prefer stuffs which is new , nice , trend and advanced regardless that is cheap or expensive and necessary or unnecessary . I believe that what she said that 80% of the planet original forests has gone and this is happened because we human kept on purchasing stuffs . Look at our earth today , compared to the early years , don’t you feel ashamed realizing how much we had actually polluted this beautiful earth in just few years time . Look at the hazy air in our country , will you feel nice and healthy to live in such polluted earth ? Don’t you want to do something to make this earth looks better and live better ?

Actually there’s ways for us to decrease the amount of toxins produced everyday in our life . One of a way for me to cut down the amount of toxins produced everyday is buy for necessary stuffs only . Moreover , try to buy stuffs which can be recycle after use . And most importantly is to increase the awareness of this serious problem to everyone in the earth .
